How To Clean Your Bicycle

Keeping your bicycle clean is an important part of bicycle maintenance, and looking at your bicycle sparkling clean is also easier on the eyes.

Over time, dirt, dust, and grime can build up on your bicycle, and if left untreated may damage the components of your bicycle. Fortunately washing your bicycle is relatively easy, so don’t be afraid to wash your bicycle when you feel that it needs a wash.

Steps to clean your bicycle

Firstly, choose a good location that is easy to wash your bicycle, and preferably has access to water to make your life easier. You can do this in the driveway of your house or any place that you are not afraid to get wet.

Next, prepare the tools needed to wash your bicycle. You will need a bucket, a sponge or a brush, mild soap or a specific cleaner for bicycles, and most importantly water. You can use a hose and a bicycle stand together to make it easier to wash your bicycle.

Now to start the process of washing your bicycle, first give it a quick pre-rinse to remove any loose dirt or debris still present on the bicycle, you can use a hose or a bucket of water to rinse down your bicycle.

Afterwards we can start by cleaning what is considered the dirtiest part of the bicycle, the wheels, as they are the one always in contact with the road. Start by applying mild soap or bicycle cleaner to the rims, spokes, and tires, and use a sponge or a brush to scrub away the dirt and grime that is on the wheels. Then you can thoroughly rinse off the soap with water.

The next step is to clean the frame of the bicycle. Apply mild soap or bicycle cleaner to the frame, and use a sponge or a brush to scrub away the dirt and grime on the frame. Pay attention to the hard-to-reach areas of the bicycle, such as the corners and the underneath of the frame. Then rinse the frame thoroughly with water.

Then we’ll move on to clean the drivetrain of your bicycle, which includes the chain, front and rear derailleurs, and the cassette. Apply mild soap or bicycle cleaner to the components of the drivetrain, and use a sponge or a brush to scrub away the dirt and grime. If the components of your drivetrain are particularly dirty, you can use a degreaser to help clean it. And rinse thoroughly with water.

With that you have completed the simple task of washing your bicycle, and what’s left is to dry your bicycle. You can wipe down your bicycle with a clean towel or cloth to remove the excess water, and leave it out to dry in the sun to make sure there is no water residue left.

Last but not least, you will need to re-lube the chain of your bicycle, as we may have washed away the lubricant when cleaning your bicycle. Use a chain lubricant to lubricate the chain and derailleurs of your bicycle, so that your bicycle chain can run smoothly.

Just by following these simple steps, you can keep your bicycle looking nice and shiny! You don’t have to clean the bicycle in the exact same order, as long as you remember to cover all the parts of your bicycle. All the steps to clean your bicycle are mostly similar, so don’t be afraid to mess up!
